The historic city of Krakow Poland is popular for its rich history, world class monuments, the Wawel Dragon, and very importantly cheap food and drink With tourism came the gentrification of the Krakow Old Town and Kazimierz district. Krakow public and urban areas were revitalised. Along with this development came the rapid expansion of the gastronomy sector On every street corner in Krakow, you can find new Polish restaurants, pop-up Asian food stands, cafés, and pubs playing music until the early morning hours. So much so that the city was awarded the European Capital of Gastronomic Culture in 2019 Enjoy Krakow’s delicious cuisine, rich in flavours, cosy and vibrant restaurants. The guide below includes twelve of my favourite local restaurants and eateries in Krakow Poland, ranging from traditional Polish street food to vegan breakfast bars. Enjoy yourselves!
Winkiel cafe is a family run establishment, serving some of the freshest breakfasts and best cakes in town
The coffee is excellent too, and hot chocolate served hot. Choose from a variety of milks (regular, soya, almond etc.) to pair with your frothy cappuccino
With seating sprawling onto the pavement outside, you can sit with a book and watch the world go by. They have an enormous selection of cakes and I highly recommend the cheese and carrot. Yum yum!
Address: Władysława Syrokomli 22, 30-102 Kraków

As someone who has grown up eating Indian food in London, I can safely say that Vatti restaurant offers the best Indian and Nepalese food in Krakow
The portions are big, prices okay, and food is served piping hot. The balti curries and vegetable samosas are very tasty, aloo paratha, stuffed full and they offer a large selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes
The food delivery service is excellent. Tip: order directly from their website, and cut out the middle man
Address: Zygmunta Krasińskiego 8, 30-101 Kraków

Arriving in the old town square for the first time the views are breathtaking, and you want to soak up a bit of atmosphere. The square is jam packed with cafes, but which one to choose? Where to sit?
Slodki Wentzl, established in 1792, is reasonably priced, and serves some of the best ice creams in Krakow. Try the ‘Jack Sparrow’ – a mix of vanilla ice cream, salted caramel, dates, pistachios, dried fruit, rum & whipped cream. Yum yum
They have a pretty good cocktail menu too, and you will have your very own table in the main town square
Address: Rynek Główny 19, 31-008 Kraków

What good visit to Krakow, would be without a visit to a Polish restaurant serving traditional food
I can highly recommend one Polish restaurant in the old town: Gościnna Chata. The interior has the wooden decor of a traditional Polish cottage house (chata). Gościnna means guest
There is normally a band playing live music, noisy groups of people, beer, and vodka. The atmosphere is ecstatic
The menu has something for everybody: carnivores, vegetarians, vegans. Reservations for large groups recommended
Address: Sławkowska 10, 33-332 Kraków

Who here can here tell me what a Golonka is? A culinary heavyweight in the Polish cuisine arsenal
Golonka which the restaurant derives its name from is a pork knuckle
Traditionally it is boiled, but sometimes also grilled. Peel back the skin, and fat, and below you will find some of the most succulent tender meat you have ever tasted. Normally it’s served on its own, or with a side of bread, some gherkins and mustard
Golonkarnia restaurant along the Wisła River is the best place to try this meaty delicacy. If Golonka isn’t your thing, they serve plenty of other meaty dishes as well
Address: Tadeusza Kościuszki 42, 30-114 Kraków

The Krakow street food scene is second to none. On every corner there are food trucks popping up day and night, serving the freshest and tastiest street food. The stakes are high
Reuben aka Mr. Broda (Mr. Beard in English) serves up the tastiest pastrami sandwiches in town
The pastrami meat is carefully cured by the owner to ensure maximum taste. The rye bread is grilled to perfection. Sandwiches of note include, Reuben, served with cheddar cheese and sauerkraut, Urban with caramelized onion and rucola salad, and Classic with lots of pastrami
Address: Krakowska 31, 33-332 Kraków

Good Lood rules the ice cream scene in Krakow. During the summer months scores of pop-up ice cream parlours open up across town, trying to get Krakovians to part with their hard earned money
Good Lood ingredients are fresh, and flavours inspiring. Classics include: dark chocolate, caramel with red himalayan salt, Polish strawberry and cream. On a daily basis, two new flavours are added to the menu
Be warned though, if you arrive during peak hours, you will be in for a bit of a wait. Everybody loves ice cream! I’ve seen scores of people waiting in front of the kiosk, come rain or shine
If you’re not into long queues, and want some of that creamy sugary goodness at home, to enjoy with a Netflix film – then you are in luck – because they also offer a free delivery service directly to your door. Prices for a large delivery box with 6 flavours start at 50 PLN

Now remember that this is a local food guide, for the local experience. So what I am about to tell you, I’m sure many readers will disagree with. The best pizza in Krakow isn’t Italian traditional pizza, but the Polish fast food equivalent – zapiekanka pizza bread
The only place to pick up (preferably after a few drinks) one of these salty, cheesy, saucy delights is plac Nowy in Kazimierz
There are scores of hole-in-wall style restaurants in the square serving up this Polish fast food delight, so I will just mention a few: Zapiexa, Smaczek, Endzior, Zapiekanki Królewskie okrąglak
Address: Plac Nowy Okrąglak, 31-056 Kraków

Anyone who knows anything about Krakow knows this delightful vegetarian restaurant just off the old town square
Chimera is an institution which has really stood the test of time. Founded in 1991, Chimera is a cafe style restaurant which serves up amazing vegetarian food from behind a counter. In case none of the food on offer that day takes your fancy, there is an À La Carte menu as well
The variety is fantastic. On a daily basis you can expect to find up to 40 different cold salad dishes, and 30 hot vegetarian and meat dishes
Address: Świętej Anny 3, 31-008 Kraków

Poland has a long tradition of Vietnamese food. An estimated 80,000 people of Vietnamese dissent live in Poland today. The immigration started back in the 1950s and 1980s following a student exchange programme between Communist Poland and Vietnam
Bonjour Pho on Krupnicza street (hipster area of Krakow worth visiting anyway) serves up some of the best Asian food in town. The pho soup is the thing to go for here, but they also have a large vegan selection and great number of noodle dishes worth trying. My wife swears by the spring rolls – says they are best in town
The restaurant service is always excellent and they offer a takeaway via one of the food delivery apps, such as: Pyszne, Wolt, Uber
Address: Krupnicza 12, 31-123 Kraków

Raw Nest describes itself as a restaurant, but it’s more like a cafeteria
They serve up some of the freshest, healthiest vegan food in town. Raw nest only uses ecological ingredients, and all produce is locally grown and seasonal
The breakfasts and smoothies are simply excellent. Wraps and lunch bowls awesome
In Kraków, if you are searching for a vegan restaurant, the choice isn’t great, but this place will definitely satisfy your vegan cravings and warm your soul

Wedel is a household name in Poland. Founded in 1851 by Karl Ernst Wedel as a small confectionery and chocolate manufacture in Warsaw
Luckily for you Wedel has opened up a cafe on the old town square. The seating area is indoors, and sometimes there are long queues to get in
But trust me when I say it’s worth the wait. The hot chocolate is to die for. Wedel is renowned for its chocolate products. Everything they serve is chocolate. Hot chocolate, chocolate dumplings (Pierogi in Polish), chocolate with fruit and chocolate ice cream
Address: Rynek Główny 46, 31-017 Kraków
